Johann Jürgen Friedrich (FREDERICK) Thiess was born in Leussow in 1844. He was the fourth child of
Einwohner Johann Friedrich Daniel Thiess and his first wife Christine Elisabeth Jungbluth, Leussow. His mother died only a few weeks after his birth, and his father married once more.

The census of 1867 tells us that Friedrich Thiess lived in Rostock at that time. Probably during the next year he emigrated to America. His destination was Clayton Co., Iowa, like for many emigrants of the region.
In Elkport he married in 1872 Sophia Wendt who was born around 1848 in Picher. She died 1881, and Thiess married in the following year
in Grand Meadow Twp., Clayton Co., Hanna Maria Sophia Wilhelmine (MINNIE) Rogmann. who was born around 1839.
